Chinese New Year Arts & Crafts for Kids

Chinese New Year has always been a traditional time for family sharing and caring, it gives us time to build connections and be engaged in some family fun by making your own Chinese New Year decorations. Chinese New year is also a great opportunity to introduce your kids to China as a country, its food, history, the geography, the home of the Panda bear and more! If you don’t want to go out and enjoy the celebrations and events which are sometimes a bit overwhelming for small kids, think lots of banging drums and fire crackers, a nice way to celebrate could be to order some Dim sum, make your own longevity noodles and get the kids to decorate with some fun DIY Chinese New Year arts and crafts.

We’ve found some great ideas how you can decorate for Chinese New Year without even having to leave the house and a bonus is, they will keep the kids occupied for hours!

The Year of the Snake begins next weekend.  In celebration of Chinese New Year, the girls and I made paper snakes.  We repurposed an empty paper towel tube to make the heads and fashioned the bodies out of folded paper garlands.

Of course paper chains are perfect for snake making! And what preschooler doesn’t love a paper chain. It is wonderful for dexterity and fine motor skills and you can make them as long or as short as you wish! Paper Chain Snakes, really are a must for anyone exploring snake crafts with their kids! And we did indeed first make these back in 2013 for Chinese New Year. All these years later, and it is time to make some more lovely snake paper chains. So fun. I would probably replace the googly eyes with fun cut out paper eyes this time round.

Fold and construct a large Paper Fan Snake using just paper! Your completed snake would make a striking DIY Lunar New Year decoration, and would look fabulous as part of a Year of the Snake display.

We have used rainbow colours for our Paper Fan Snake , but you could use any colourful paper you have to hand. If you’re making this as a group project, each child could decorate one of the concertina segments of the snake’s body which can then be connected together to make one huge collaborative snake.
